ABOUT

I am a freshman at Plainfield East High School and I am a Girl Scout Senior.  In my search for a Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I had to find an issue in my community.  I wanted a project that I could do as a teenager to make a difference in the lives of kids in my community.  I wanted this project to have a big impact on children having difficulties in school. I wanted it to be a project that other high school students could implement in their communities as a community service project. This project had to be sustainable! I reflected on my experience helping 3rd grade students at St. Scholastica School when I was in 8th grade and I decided to implement a tutoring program for elementary students.  I want to help students whose parents cannot afford the high cost of tutoring.  So my Gold Award project is a high school volunteer tutoring program that helps elemantary students with math, science, and language arts.

Who would the high school students tutor?

The High School Tutoring (HST) program is for students grades kindergarten through fifth needing help in math, science, and language arts. This program would also benefit high school students interested in earning community service hours and/or are interested in majoring in education in college.

Which students can benefit from this program?

Not every student learns at the same pace.  Some students need more reinforcement and practice with new material.  Teachers may not have the time to stop and work with individual students that need more time in areas of math, science, and language arts.  Parents may not have the time to work with their chidlren due to having busy work and family schedules.  These students may need just a little help to become successful and succeed in school.  However, some parents can not afford the high cost of tutoring for their children.

Students helping Students

High school students who have mastered the fundamental building block skills in math, sciience and language arts could help struggling students in these subjects and provide added guidance.  High school students benefit from helping kids in their community and elementary students benefit from free tutoring and extra help.
